21-11-2025: CASE Activity Report – “Creating Awareness Through Science Education”

CASE Activity Report – “Creating Awareness Through Science Education”

Organised by II M.Sc. Organic Chemistry Students

On 21-11-2025, the II M.Sc. Organic Chemistry students conducted a CASE (Creating Awareness through Science Education) programme at St. Anthony’s High School. The main aim of this activity was to make school students experience the wonders of chemistry through simple, safe and fun-filled experiments, and to create interest in science beyond the textbook.

During the session, the students demonstrated a series of eye-catching experiments such as Blue Bottle MagicMagic SmokeVolcanic EruptionSugar Magic, and Elephant Toothpaste. Each experiment was first shown as a “magic trick” to capture the curiosity of the school children and then explained in simple scientific terms. This approach helped the students understand that what looks like “magic” is actually based on chemical reactions, colour changes, gas evolution, and catalysis.

During the session, the students demonstrated a series of eye-catching experiments such as Blue Bottle Magic, Magic Smoke, Volcanic Eruption, Sugar Magic, and Elephant Toothpaste. Each experiment was first shown as a “magic trick” to capture the curiosity of the school children and then explained in simple scientific terms. This approach helped the students understand that what looks like “magic” is actually based on chemical reactions, colour changes, gas evolution, and catalysis

The high school students were excited and actively participated by asking questions and trying to guess the reasons behind the colour changes and foaming reactions. Through these interactive demonstrations, they learnt how chemistry is connected to daily life and how experiments can be done safely with proper guidance. Many students expressed that the session made them feel that science is fun, interesting, and not something to be afraid of.

This CASE event not only strengthened the teaching–learning bond between the M.Sc. students and the school children but also helped the postgraduate students improve their science communication and outreach skills. We are thankful to the school management, teachers, and our department faculty for their support and encouragement in successfully conducting this programme.
